Messy Desk Dilema {DIY Drawer Organizer}

I'm still here....
It's been a wild week. Felt sick on Monday, kiddo stuff on Tuesday,
taxes DONE on Wednesday and
FAFSA junk in between.
To those of you that have college kids, I'm sure we are all in agreement....
I STRONGLY DISLIKE doing FAFSA! And for those who don't know what it is, don't bother, maybe there will be an easier way to obtain student loans, when it's time for your kiddos.
I could say more but I won't.
Ok...off my soapbox.
~~~~~~~
I have been working on the office.
Well.... a tinsty bit.  But hopefully we will be moving some things around in the office this weekend.  Then I can really get down to business.
My Messy Desk:
Haha! I wish I could always keep it looking that good all the time!
Maybe I will after today!
BUT....
Most of the time is has looked like this....
So, I know that none of you have desks that look like this.... Right?
Right... sure... no really, I believe you...
Well, I'm really trying to get organized.
Especially in the office, but it's sooo hard!
Well, I have the answer to the messy desk dilema!
Yep, cereal boxes, snack boxes, any boxes!
Cheap FREE boxes that you usually throw away right?
Start saving them. I've been saving mine for a couple of weeks.
The reason, I don't go out and spend $$ on a cute adorable desk organizer is because for one, I'm cheap.  Second, in my thinking, why spend money on something no one is going to see... I mean I keep my desk drawer closed most of the time, don't you?  It's not on display, saying "Hey, look how cute and functional I am".  Nope, it's in the drawer all closed up and hiding.
It just needs to be functional.
So, let's make this thing already!
This post may contain affiliate links or sponsored content. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
My drawer is 2 inches deep, so every box had to be measured and cut to that size.
Then I got all the junk out of the drawer and figured what was staying and going.  Rearranged them a few times til it fits just right.
Cool,  now I'm ready to cover them.  Who wants to look at brown cardboard in your drawer.  Just because I'm cheap, doesn't mean I like ugly.
Of course, I was in my local Dollar Store....
Ahhh.... do you hear the angels singing? :))
I was doing a little browsing and came across some cute wrapping paper,
that was blue and green. Perfect!
 Plus see those cutting lines... LOVE!
That made it so much easier to measure and cut.
And check out the adorable polka dots!
Get out your bottle of Mod Podge and get ready to glue!  First, I did the edges.
Then I cut a longer piece to go up and over each section.  Pretty easy... Now it wasn't perfect. There were a few wrinkles.
It's okay, remember it will be stuffed with stuff in your closed drawer,
so who really cares?
Not me...
 Here are a few more shots fitting inside my desk drawer.
Not bad... I see a light at the end of the tunnel....
I really need to do this to all of my junk drawers in the house...
I have to many of them... another day...
So, here's the messy desk
Before:
And now all pretty and organized!
After:
I'm happy with it!
Thanks for stopping by and visiting for a bit!
**UPDATE: This has been such a lifesaver!  I've actually made a few others. Once I've organized a drawer with these little boxes, it has actually stayed organized!
Check out the other drawers I've done.
  4. Great idea! So simple and cheap. I love that you can customize it to fit any drawer. The drawer organizers from the store don't always fit. Visiting you from Addicted 2 Decorating. I'm now following and look forward to seeing more of your creative ideas. Have a great weekend!
  8. Lori, I love this. I've just made over my desk and just used a shoebox for stationery and another for notepads but it doesn't look anywhere near as nice as yours. I think I need to compartmentise (is that a word) my shoeboxes. Just wonderful! I also have a linky party called "Thriving on Thursdays" here in Australia and would love it if you linked this idea up for my followers.
  17. Amazing and pretty! What a great idea! I bought a drawer organizer but some of the compartments are too small and my stuff just doesn't fit right. Now with your great idea, I can make my own compartments whatever size I want! Thank you, thank you!!
  19. I have a question on this - I am a Modge Podge newbie (gasp!!) I know. Used it once at age 7, haven't touched it since. Do you paint it on with a sponge brush to the back of the paper and just stick it to the boxes light a thin liquid Elmers white glue? Or is there a better technique?
    Thanks!
    First a question (see above) and now a comment. My Mom saved all of the boxes that Velveeta cheese comes in. They are sturdy and I think would match up to the heighth of most drawers. Might work right in with the cereal boxes.
    I keep trying to find uses for detergent boxes -especially liked the one with the plastic carrying handle attached.
    1. Hi Libby! First, I want to thank you for stopping by and reading!! I'm really not an "expert" with modge podge, but I'll tell you what I did. I found that a regular small paint brush worked better for me than a sponge one. I just dipped it in the bottle and slathered it on. I first "painted" it on the boxes then put the paper on it. Then when that dried did another coat on top of the paper. It kind of sealed it then. Let me know if you have any other questions! :)
      Good idea on the velveeta boxes! I've heard of using the laundry detergent boxes as storage for kids toys, or paint supplies, or other kid craft supplies. You could even put their names on the front. Good luck!
  26. Found you on pinterest. I've saved my boxes for cutting in my personal cutting machine, but I LOVE this! I'm setting up my new craft room, so I'm definitely doing this. By the way, I don't like fasfa either. Since I did the majority of the homeschooling, it's my husband's job to do the fasfa. He and the daughters have a fasfa party sometime around New Years. They have tea, i make tea cakes, and they do their paperwork. Feel free to check out my blog, just for fun. www.thisandthatfromtami.blogspot.com
But I'm the one that got stuck with that one. This next year I'll only have one! I'll have my oldest graduating, where did the time go??? I checked out your blog. Adorable! I'm your newest follwer :)
  27. This is so awesome! I found this on Pinterest and have a few drawers that I will definitely be doing this to :] You could also cut them into magazine/file-type organizers.. that'll be great and super cheap!! Or for organization in the cooking utensils drawer which always causes me havoc.. thanks so much for sharing!!
  28. I love it. I have already done one of the junk drawers this morning. It holds the cameras and phonebooks and little odd and ends. It really wouldn't be that junky but I haven't taught my husband of 7 years to put things back where he gets them from just yet. I'm hoping to either make my life easier or train him by 10 years of marriage. lol. So I'm working on the easiest of the two which is organizing to make my life easier, and your box idea has already helped. Thank you. :)
  35. Love it! Saw this on pinterest. I was trying to organize my 4-year-olds legos and found that empty check boxes in plastic drawers worked best but I have wondering how I could get my hands on soo many of those boxes. Now I don't have to! What I wonderful idea!
  36. Love this idea. I have 8 kids and lots & lots of boxes and various other items that would work for this. We are moving in less than a month, this will be amazing to have ready for the "junk drawers" in each child's room, as well as the kitchen drawers with the plethora of kitchen tools. I may use contact paper for wash-ability but this is perfect!!! Thanks for a cheap and relatively easy project. I think I may have each kiddo find their own boxes to create their drawer organizer.
    Thanks again!
  37. This is SUCH a great idea! I live in an apartment complex which doesn't recycle plus I'm disabled so on a low monthly income. Well, these are 2 times better as I can actually 'recycle' them & I already paid for them so I don't have to spend extra money that I don't have! I will definitely be doing this...as soon as I save up more boxes.
    Thanks alot for sharing this! :)
I'm thinking it will also work in a vintage travel case I am converting to a sewing case. I can't find anything else that fits. Custom cereal boxes has to be the answer. And I love repurpose ideas.
