I'm still here....
It's been a wild week. Felt sick on Monday, kiddo stuff on Tuesday,
taxes DONE on Wednesday and
FAFSA junk in between.
To those of you that have college kids, I'm sure we are all in agreement....
I STRONGLY DISLIKE doing FAFSA! And for those who don't know what it is, don't bother, maybe there will be an easier way to obtain student loans, when it's time for your kiddos.
I could say more but I won't.
Ok...off my soapbox.
~~~~~~~
I have been working on the office.
Well.... a tinsty bit. But hopefully we will be moving some things around in the office this weekend. Then I can really get down to business.
My Messy Desk:
Maybe I will after today!
BUT....
Most of the time is has looked like this....
So, I know that none of you have desks that look like this.... Right?
Right... sure... no really, I believe you...
Well, I'm really trying to get organized.
Especially in the office, but it's sooo hard!
Well, I have the answer to the messy desk dilema!
Yep, cereal boxes, snack boxes, any boxes!
Cheap FREE boxes that you usually throw away right?
Start saving them. I've been saving mine for a couple of weeks.
The reason, I don't go out and spend $$ on a cute adorable desk organizer is because for one, I'm cheap. Second, in my thinking, why spend money on something no one is going to see... I mean I keep my desk drawer closed most of the time, don't you? It's not on display, saying "Hey, look how cute and functional I am". Nope, it's in the drawer all closed up and hiding.
It just needs to be functional.
So, let's make this thing already!
This post may contain affiliate links or sponsored content. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
My drawer is 2 inches deep, so every box had to be measured and cut to that size.
Then I got all the junk out of the drawer and figured what was staying and going. Rearranged them a few times til it fits just right.
Cool, now I'm ready to cover them. Who wants to look at brown cardboard in your drawer. Just because I'm cheap, doesn't mean I like ugly.
Of course, I was in my local Dollar Store....
Ahhh.... do you hear the angels singing? :))
I was doing a little browsing and came across some cute wrapping paper,
that was blue and green. Perfect!
Plus see those cutting lines... LOVE!
That made it so much easier to measure and cut.
And check out the adorable polka dots!
Get out your bottle of Mod Podge and get ready to glue! First, I did the edges.
Then I cut a longer piece to go up and over each section. Pretty easy... Now it wasn't perfect. There were a few wrinkles.
It's okay, remember it will be stuffed with stuff in your closed drawer,
so who really cares?
Not me...
Here are a few more shots fitting inside my desk drawer.
Not bad... I see a light at the end of the tunnel....
I really need to do this to all of my junk drawers in the house...
I have to many of them... another day...
So, here's the messy desk
Before:
And now all pretty and organized!
After:
I'm happy with it!
Thanks for stopping by and visiting for a bit!
**UPDATE: This has been such a lifesaver! I've actually made a few others. Once I've organized a drawer with these little boxes, it has actually stayed organized!
Check out the other drawers I've done.
Great idea! So simple and cheap. I love that you can customize it to fit any drawer. The drawer organizers from the store don't always fit. Visiting you from Addicted 2 Decorating. I'm now following and look forward to seeing more of your creative ideas. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteSharla
Really creative! the perfect solution to organize my own drawers!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!!!
Ana
I love this! It would be great for a make up drawer too! The the paper is so happy :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant idea - Love the colour!
ReplyDeleteLori, I love this. I've just made over my desk and just used a shoebox for stationery and another for notepads but it doesn't look anywhere near as nice as yours. I think I need to compartmentise (is that a word) my shoeboxes. Just wonderful! I also have a linky party called "Thriving on Thursdays" here in Australia and would love it if you linked this idea up for my followers.
ReplyDeleteAnne @ Domesblissity xx
You are the queen of the cardboard box! I love these organizers. Thanks for linking up!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tisha!! I love to repurpose... even better to repurpose trash!
DeleteSUPERB simply.. That's all I can say.. I'm pinning it and will be sharing on my facebook page tomorrow.. :) Thanks for linking up at friday fun party..
ReplyDeleteHello Lori,
ReplyDeleteNice work, your desk drawer is now so nicely organized. I love being organized. Thanks for the inspiration. ;o)
ReplyDeleteso cute and creative. love the colors also!!
ReplyDeletePerfect timing:) I am in a mad clear out and clean up stage right now and I must organize my desk:) I am definitely trying this:) Pinning as we speak:) Thank you for sharing at Freedom Fridays!
ReplyDeleteAmazing and pretty! What a great idea! I bought a drawer organizer but some of the compartments are too small and my stuff just doesn't fit right. Now with your great idea, I can make my own compartments whatever size I want! Thank you, thank you!!
ReplyDeleteLove it. Just fit *everything* that had taken up space in my junk drawer into one vertically placed cereal box. Now I have a ton of room for more... junk!
ReplyDeleteI have a question on this - I am a Modge Podge newbie (gasp!!) I know. Used it once at age 7, haven't touched it since. Do you paint it on with a sponge brush to the back of the paper and just stick it to the boxes light a thin liquid Elmers white glue? Or is there a better technique?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
First a question (see above) and now a comment. My Mom saved all of the boxes that Velveeta cheese comes in. They are sturdy and I think would match up to the heighth of most drawers. Might work right in with the cereal boxes.
ReplyDeleteI keep trying to find uses for detergent boxes -especially liked the one with the plastic carrying handle attached.
Hi Libby! First, I want to thank you for stopping by and reading!! I'm really not an "expert" with modge podge, but I'll tell you what I did. I found that a regular small paint brush worked better for me than a sponge one. I just dipped it in the bottle and slathered it on. I first "painted" it on the boxes then put the paper on it. Then when that dried did another coat on top of the paper. It kind of sealed it then. Let me know if you have any other questions! :)
DeleteGood idea on the velveeta boxes! I've heard of using the laundry detergent boxes as storage for kids toys, or paint supplies, or other kid craft supplies. You could even put their names on the front. Good luck!
What fabulous idea! I'm so excited about this I'm going to try it today! I can even make a 2 sectioned piece and cover it with cars paper for my sons sock and underwear drawr! I love it! Sharing it with family and friends! -Shawnasie Lesley
ReplyDeleteYay!! I love it when someone is inspired to try something I did! Your son is going to LOVE it!!
DeleteYours are fancier that what I have done I just used them as plain box but I used them also in my kitchen drawers for utensils. Glad for reusing things. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea! Mine are a mess... I guess I should do those too.... Too much to do, too little time...
DeleteLove this!! I hate how I can never find store bought ones that fit the right way or function the way I want! This is super cute way to personalize it to fit your needs!! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI saw this on Pinterest. What a cool idea! My daughter is always trying to save the cereal boxes for crafts. Now we have something else to make. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOooo I love Pinterest! Yay! I love being crafty with things we were just going to throw away... Have fun! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI was wondering if you ever experimented with using contact paper instead of gift wrap and Mod-Podge?
ReplyDeleteFound you on pinterest. I've saved my boxes for cutting in my personal cutting machine, but I LOVE this! I'm setting up my new craft room, so I'm definitely doing this. By the way, I don't like fasfa either. Since I did the majority of the homeschooling, it's my husband's job to do the fasfa. He and the daughters have a fasfa party sometime around New Years. They have tea, i make tea cakes, and they do their paperwork. Feel free to check out my blog, just for fun. www.thisandthatfromtami.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteFondly, Tami
I LOVE Pinterest!!! Good luck on the new craft room! I homeschooled for awhile when the kiddos were younger for about 5 years, tough job! Nice that hubby does the fafsa, I wish... But I'm the one that got stuck with that one. This next year I'll only have one! I'll have my oldest graduating, where did the time go??? I checked out your blog. Adorable! I'm your newest follwer :)
DeleteThis is so awesome! I found this on Pinterest and have a few drawers that I will definitely be doing this to :] You could also cut them into magazine/file-type organizers.. that'll be great and super cheap!! Or for organization in the cooking utensils drawer which always causes me havoc.. thanks so much for sharing!!
ReplyDelete-Krista
I love it. I have already done one of the junk drawers this morning. It holds the cameras and phonebooks and little odd and ends. It really wouldn't be that junky but I haven't taught my husband of 7 years to put things back where he gets them from just yet. I'm hoping to either make my life easier or train him by 10 years of marriage. lol. So I'm working on the easiest of the two which is organizing to make my life easier, and your box idea has already helped. Thank you. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Stephanie!!
DeleteHahaha! That's great! You've done more than I have! I'm so glad it's helped! As for hubby... they are always a work in progress... I've been married almost 25 years! <3!
Thank you so much I did this today for my daughters top drawer to keep panties, socks etc organized an not only do I love it but so does my daughter who is 4!!! Mommy.np@gmail.com
I think I am going to do this with duct tape to cover the boxes, they have so many designs now and I have seen it in sheets also.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's SO cheery looking too! Just love the idea. I am going to make these for all the drawers in my utility room...
ReplyDeleteThanks - great project. I just did it with my 8 year old daughter, who loves anything with crafts. We had a great time working on it together (about an hour), felt good about recycling and had fun using different patterned paper on each section. Thanks! Mike
ReplyDeleteThank you, Aunt B!! Isn't Pinterest the best?? :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! Saw this on pinterest. I was trying to organize my 4-year-olds legos and found that empty check boxes in plastic drawers worked best but I have wondering how I could get my hands on soo many of those boxes. Now I don't have to! What I wonderful idea!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea. I have 8 kids and lots & lots of boxes and various other items that would work for this. We are moving in less than a month, this will be amazing to have ready for the "junk drawers" in each child's room, as well as the kitchen drawers with the plethora of kitchen tools. I may use contact paper for wash-ability but this is perfect!!! Thanks for a cheap and relatively easy project. I think I may have each kiddo find their own boxes to create their drawer organizer.
ReplyDeleteThanks again!
This is SUCH a great idea! I live in an apartment complex which doesn't recycle plus I'm disabled so on a low monthly income. Well, these are 2 times better as I can actually 'recycle' them & I already paid for them so I don't have to spend extra money that I don't have! I will definitely be doing this...as soon as I save up more boxes.
ReplyDeleteThanks alot for sharing this! :)
Thanks, Kelly! It won't take long to save up enough boxes! Have fun!
DeleteSuper cute! I made some like this for my bathroom drawers as well. But since its moist I used duct tape to cover the boxes. Worked out great and a year later they r still holding up very nicely. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteVERY, VERY GOOD. ADOREI
My desk drawer looks exactly like yours did and unfortunately, I tore up and threw away 2 cereal boxes just this morning! Ugh! Will start saving them and have tons of wrapping paper that my husband found and brought home that someone threw away! Thanks for the ideas! jenniewillis@windstream.net
ReplyDeleteAdorei a idéia, vou fazer na gaveta onde minha filha guarda suas maquiagens, ficarão bem organizadas. Obrigada poe compartilhar....abraços!
This is awesome! I saved boxes before and just didn't know how to do anything with them! This is perfect.I am a "messy" and very unorganized person. Looks like tons of fun too. Thanks so much!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is perfect! I immediately have to do these for my draws in my and my kids' rooms. Thanks for sharing this cheap but great tutorial. Vijaya
ReplyDeleteOne of the best parts about graduating this spring, no more FAFSA filling out for me! Haha.
ReplyDeleteI've made similar organizers out of cardboard before, but I hadn't thought to cover it like that before. Thanks for the great idea!
Great! I love perfect timing! This will definitely be cheap, just not sure if they will last 30 years... :)
ReplyDeleteI am in Brasilian, adorei o seu trabalho, lindo!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this! I've been saving boxes for a few weeks and will be re-organizing my office this weekend. Hope mine looks as nice as yours. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi Brandy! Good for you! I bet it's going to look AWESOME!!
DeleteI love this idea. I'm thinking of trying it for my cutlery drawer in the kitchen but using duck tape instead of the wrapping paper so I can wipe them out.
ReplyDeleteOlá!
ReplyDeleteAdorei a tua idéia. Vou colocar em prática agora mesmo e organizar as minhas gavetas. Obrigada por compartilhar. Abraço. Rosalina
Loved this idea, thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWorks great with shelf paper too... no glue required.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this!!! Can't wait to start saving boxes and do this project when the kids go back to school....thanks for sharing Lori :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Lori for the great tutorial.Sounds like a great project to share with my 8 year old
ReplyDeletegrandson. Think we will make one for his mum for xmas. Have also put you into my favorites. have a creative day Lyn
Hi Lyn! Thanks! That is a fantastic idea as a Christmas gift! Blessings to you!
ReplyDeleteLori, This is just what I need for that scary junk drawer in the kitchen and the cluttered drawers in the bathroom. I'm thinking it will also work in a vintage travel case I am converting to a sewing case. I can't find anything else that fits. Custom cereal boxes has to be the answer. And I love repurpose ideas. Thanks a bunch!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! That would work perfect for your vintage travel case! In fact, I just made some to hold all my spools of thread that were all jumbled together. So cheap and so easy! Blessings!
DeleteThese are beautiful!! I used make desk organizers all the time. But way you prettied them up is amazing. Love them.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I love them, and they are still holding up terrific! Thanks for stopping by!
